Trying to navigate all the different PPE masks can be daunting. So we thought it would be prudent to a post that would help explain the terminology and when best to use each type of mask. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Single Use Face Masks<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are to be used by staff, employees or civilians. They offer a basic layer of protection against larger particle sizes – bacteria, droplets, etc…these cannot be worn by health professionals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Surgical Masks<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

These will offer much better protection and typically have 3 layers with a melt-blown filter layer. These can be worn by medical professionals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

N95\/NIOSH\/KN95<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The highest level of protection you can have outside of a hazmat suit is wearing an N95\/KN95 respirator mask. However, it is CRITICAL that you make sure that you have your mask property fitted. Most hospitals will do fittings to ensure zero leakage into the mask. But if you are using these in a clinical setting, you will need to a manual fitting and seal test with each usage.
